Pemba & connectivity

A sense of place.
A wider horizon.

Pemba is the northern of Zanzibar’s two main islands, off the coast of Tanzania. It is the setting for Kilimani Village’s vision of a quieter coastal community.

Regional infrastructure

Pemba Airport.
The next chapter.

The airport expansion is intended to accommodate larger aircraft and improve connectivity. UKEF’s published project scope includes a runway extended to 2,510 metres and widened to 45 metres, with a new terminal and associated airport facilities.

The planned Code 4C design includes the Code C wingspan category: 24 metres up to, but not including, 36 metres. Aircraft examples within this range include suitable Boeing 737 variants and the Airbus A220-100 and A220-300. Actual operations depend on aircraft weight, runway and pavement capability, operating conditions and regulatory approval; the code does not confirm any airline service.

Reporting dated 25 September 2025 records the handover of the construction site to the contractor and an expected capacity of approximately 330,000 passengers per year once operational. The airport is a separate public infrastructure project; its timetable does not establish Kilimani’s delivery timetable.

Connecting the island economy

Direct international access is expected to support tourism, employment, trade and investment on Pemba. Easier connections could create opportunities for local hospitality, transport and other businesses, while improving access for visitors and commercial partners. These are anticipated benefits, not guaranteed economic outcomes.

No opening date, future airline routes or journey times are guaranteed here. Information reviewed 13 October 2026.
